Lug Walk – Update 2025
The Lug Walk
The Lug Walk is a long-distance endurance walk from Seahan Forest, Bohernabreena, Co. Dublin, over the mountain tops to Lugnaquilla, Co. Wicklow, ending at Seskin in the Glen of Imaal. It is 50 kilometres long with a total ascent of 2,400 metres. It covers 17 peaks and is mainly over open mountain terrain. This walk is a serious test of navigational skill as well as of stamina. The average time taken to cover the route is 13.5 hours. The walk is usually held at, or close to the Summer solstice in order to maximise the daylight hours available.
The Irish Ramblers Club organised its first Lug Walk for members in 1974 to celebrate its tenth anniversary. In 1977 it opened the walk to non-members. In recent years it has become a biennial event. The most recent Lug Challenge Walk was on the 17th of June, 2023. For a number of reasons, the Lug Walk Challenge will not be held in 2025. Keep an eye on this website for future updates about the walk.
